Gained her PhD in Pharmacy at the Universidad de Navarra in 1995. Elena has made a number of postdoctoral visits to centres abroad including the UCLA Faculty of Medicine (Los Angeles, California) and the Physiology Department of the University of California in Irvine (UCI). She currently combines her position as Contracted Lecturer as Doctor in Physiology at the Universidad Pública de Navarra with her role as Director at INGEMA, which both promotes research projects in the field of the promotion of active aging and e-health. She is the principal researcher on numerous funded research projects on physiology and gerontology and is the author or co-author of over twenty scientific research articles in international periodicals. In 2004 she received the "Beca Ortiz de Landázuri" granted by the Health Department of the Government of Navarre. She is a member of the Sociedad española de Ciencias Fisiológicas, Sociedad española de geriatria y Gerontología, International Society for the Advance of Alzheimer´s research and treatment and of the American Physiological Society.
She is currently supervising three doctoral theses and is a peer-reviewer of international books and articles on physiology.
